Hanle-Zeeman scattering matrix
نویسنده
چکیده
A theory is presented that allows the Mueller matrix for coherent scattering to be calculated for arbitrary magnetic fields, atomic multiplets, and scattering transitions (Rayleigh or Raman scattering). For the special case of a normal Zeeman triplet (a J = 0 → 1 → 0 scattering transition) a compact analytical form for the scattering matrix is given, which allows us to better see how the various field-strength regimes are connected. A number of limiting cases are retrieved from the general theory, including the weak-field Hanle phase matrix, the polarization of forbidden coronal lines (strong-field limit), “thermal” radiation (emission vector in LTE) and incoherent scattering. The analytical form for the transition of the Hanle effect from the line core (where it is present) to the line wings (where it is absent) is given.

The Hanle Effect as a Diagnostic of Magnetic Fields in Stellar Envelopes IV. Application to Polarized P Cygni Wind Lines
The Hanle effect has been proposed as a new diagnostic of circumstellar magnetic fields for early-type stars, for which it is sensitive to field strengths in the 1-300 G range. In this paper we compute the polarized P-Cygni line profiles that result from the Hanle effect. For modeling the polarization, we employ a variant of the “last scattering approximation”. For cases in which the Sobolev op...
متن کاملThe Hanle and Zeeman effects in solar spicules: a novel diagnostic window on chromospheric magnetism
An attractive diagnostic tool for investigating the magnetism of the solar chromosphere is the observation and theoretical modeling of the Hanle and Zeeman effects in spicules, as shown in this letter for the first time. Here we report on spectropolarimetric observations of solar chromospheric spicules in the He i 10830 Å multiplet and on their theoretical modeling accounting for radiative tran...

The Hanle e†ect concerns the modiÐcation of polarized resonance-line scattering by magnetic Ðelds ; thus, it can be used as a diagnostic of stellar magnetic Ðelds. The Hanle e†ect has been used to determine the Ðeld strength and distribution of magnetic structures present in prominences of the Sun. To investigate its potential use in stellar astronomy, the simpliÐed case of an optically thin ax...

Hanle-effect observations of forbidden coronal line transitions and recently also longitudinal Zeeman-effect measurements of coronal lines show quantitative signatures of the weak coronal magnetic field. The interpretation of these observations is, however, complicated by the fact that they are the result of line-of-sight integrations through the optically thin corona. We study by means of simu...
متن کاملRemote sensing of chromospheric magnetic fields via the Hanle and Zeeman effects
— The only way to obtain reliable empirical information on the intensity and topology of the weak magnetic fields of the “quiet” solar chromosphere is via the measurement and rigorous physical interpretation of polarization signals in chromospheric spectral lines. The observed Stokes profiles reported here are due to the Hanle and Zeeman effects operating in a weakly magnetized plasma that is i...
